Did you know that there were Human Zoos on display in Europe and America from the 1870’s to the 1950’s? These public exhibits of humans,often called Negro Villages, usually showed indigenous people in a so-called natural or primitive state. The displays often emphasized the cultural differences between Europeans of Western civilization and non-European peoples.

Above is a photo from Amsterdam Holland around 1890, of an African child in one of these Human Zoo exhibits,being fed like an animal by white spectators.

This past Memorial Day weekend, while walking home from work, twin brothers Aaron and Kristin were brutally attacked around 3 am Sunday in the LES by approximately 10-12 men. Despite eyewitnesses and surveillance video of the attack, the NYPD were quick to label the attack “gang related” and close the case without any investigation. When Aaron’s girlfriend, Cipriana followed up with police a day after the attack she was told that the twins said they did not want an investigation and would “handle it themselves”. Knowing this was untrue, Cipriana encouraged Aaron to contact the police and ask them to pursue the investigation.

When Aaron spoke with police and explained that they did in fact want an investigation he was told he could “face jail time for lying”. It wasn’t until Cipriana took to her blog, urbanbushbabes.com to write about the attack and the lack of police investigation that the press took note (NY Post & Fox 5) and the police suddenly changed their tune. Now the NYPD claims the case was never closed and has labeled it a hate crime.

Nineteen-year-old Tarikuwa Lemma is a survivor, of an international adoption scandal. When she was 13, she was effectively sold from her native Ethiopia to an American family. The corrupt “adoption agency” convinced her father, who was a widow, that Tarikuwa and her younger sisters were headed to the U.S. as part of an educational exchange program, and that they would return home every summer and on holiday breaks. Little did he know, his daughters had been placed with adoptive couples in the U.S., never to return. Tarikuwa’s name was changed against her will, and she was forbidden by her American “family” from speaking her native language. The issue of transnational adoption, its evangelical Christian component, and the exploitation of communities that sometimes results, is the subject of the book, The Child Catchers: Rescue, Trafficking and the New Gospel of Adoption by Kathryn Joyce, who appeared, along with Tarikuwa, on last Sunday’s “Melissa Harris Perry” show on MSNBC. Below is Tarikuwa’s satirical look at the “rescue” of children from her home country, to “better lives” in America.
